As an editorial documentary wedding photographer covering Cape Cod, Boston, Newport, and Nantucket, I shoot the candlelit reception more often than any other reception style. Photographing a candlelit wedding
Shooting in candlelight is a craft. The light is beautiful but the dynamic range is brutal. Faces sit in shadow next to candles that read as pure white. The wrong exposure choice flattens the room or blows out every flame in the frame. My approach is to expose for the candle warmth, to use the fastest glass available (primes at f/1.4 and f/1.8), and to push ISO into ranges where the warmth becomes the point. I do not use direct flash at candlelit receptions unless asked. Direct flash kills the mood the room spent thousands of dollars building. I shoot a documentary editorial frame at the long table that preserves the candle flame, the silverware reflection, the wine glass refraction, and the warm skin tone of the people sitting there.
