I photograph proposals on Nantucket. The reason this page exists is that almost nobody photographs them well. The genre is full of overlit phone snaps and posed redos that miss the actual moment. Editorial documentary work on a real surprise proposal is rare. This is what it looks like when it goes right.
A Sunset Proposal at The Wauwinet
Julian planned a sunset proposal for Rachel at The Wauwinet on the quiet end of Nantucket, eight miles from town where the harbor opens to the Atlantic and the dunes hold the light long into the evening. The plan was the back lawn of the resort, the strip of grass between the main house and the water, at the hour when the sky goes copper. My job was to be invisible.
The Hide
I tucked into the dune fence at the edge of the lawn with a long lens and shot through the seagrass. The grass softened the foreground and let the frame breathe. Rachel never saw me. Julian had given me the signal in advance. When he stopped walking and turned toward her, I started shooting. The first frame in this gallery is the second before. The next is the moment of yes.
After the Moment
Once she said yes I stepped out of the dunes and the rest of the session was portraits and details. The Wauwinet at golden hour gives you light I cannot replicate anywhere else in New England. We walked the lawn, the dock, the path back through the dunes. Rings on the railing. The two of them laughing on the steps. Nothing posed. Everything moving.

Where I Photograph Nantucket Proposals
The Wauwinet back lawn at sunset is the strongest location on the island for a surprise proposal. The privacy of the eastern end, the open dune frame, and the golden hour light combine in a way nowhere else on Nantucket does. I also photograph proposals at the Galley Beach, the Sankaty Head bluff, the cobblestone streets of downtown Nantucket and Sconset, and the private home harbor lawns when couples are renting.

What does a Nantucket proposal photographer cost?
My standard rate is $850 per hour. A proposal session is usually 1 to 2 hours and includes on site photography, full editing, and travel within 1.5 hours of the Cape Cod Canal. Nantucket access is by ferry from Hyannis and is included in the planning.
How do you photograph the moment without being seen?
For Julian and Rachel I hid near the dune fence with a long lens. The proposer and I plan the angle, the time, and the signal in advance. The person being proposed to never sees me. The framing reads as if I was standing right there.
Can a proposal session turn into engagement and wedding coverage?
Yes, and that is the path I prefer. The same editorial documentary eye that captured the proposal carries into the engagement session and the wedding day. Many of my couples book me for all three.
