Newport, Rhode Island has a quality the rest of the Northeast can’t quite imitate. Gilded Age mansions on the cliffs. The Atlantic at the back door. The Cliff Walk threading past Ochre Court and The Breakers like a private path. If you’re planning a wedding in Newport at Salve Regina University, at Castle Hill Inn, at Belle Mer, or at any of the great Newport venues, you want a photographer who treats Newport like Newport and not just another New England coastal town. Below is the engagement session I photographed for Monica and Jameson on the Salve Regina campus and the Cliff Walk last weekend. It’s the kind of session I want more of. A great couple, a venue that does the heavy lifting, and Atlantic light at the back of every frame.
MONICA AND JAMESON AT SALVE REGINA
We met at the front lawn of Ochre Court, the 1892 stone mansion that sits at the center of the Salve campus. From there we worked our way across the lawn, around the side of the mansion, and out to the Cliff Walk where the path opens to the ocean. The light cooperated. Late afternoon sun caught the granite of Ochre Court at golden hour, and we finished the session with portraits along the cliff edge as the sun rolled west.
ABOUT SALVE REGINA UNIVERSITY
Salve Regina University sits on an oceanside campus on Ochre Point Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island, in the heart of the historic Bellevue Avenue district. The grounds back into the Cliff Walk and look out over the Atlantic. The university’s flagship event venue is Ochre Court, built in 1892 by architect Richard Morris Hunt for the Goelet family as a summer home. It is one of the original Newport mansions and one of the most photographed buildings in the city.
Ceremonies take place at the campus’s Our Lady of Mercy chapel. Receptions move to Ochre Court, where the flagstone terraces and ornate interior accommodate up to 200 guests. Salve Regina is now open to all couples (not just alumni), which has made it one of the most sought after Newport venues for 2026 and 2027 weddings.

WHY SALVE REGINA IS A PHOTOGRAPHER’S VENUE
Most Newport venues give you one strong portrait location. Salve Regina gives you a tour through the Gilded Age. The granite front of Ochre Court at sunset. The flagstone terrace facing the Atlantic. The chapel courtyard. The interior hall with its ornate marble. The Cliff Walk just behind the property, where the path narrows between the mansion and the ocean. If your timeline is built around the light, your portrait set is going to look like a magazine feature.
The light at Salve Regina cooperates almost every time. The mansion faces roughly east, so morning getting ready inside has long windows of soft Atlantic light. Late afternoon ceremonies catch the warm western fall across the lawn and the granite. Sunset on the Cliff Walk is the most flattering portrait window of the day, right when guests are at cocktail hour and we can pull you both away for fifteen minutes of editorial frames.
A NEWPORT WEDDING DAY
Most Newport weddings run a similar arc. Hair and makeup wraps in a hotel suite or a private home around midday. Photographs of the dress, the rings, and the room before the bride is in. First look on the Cliff Walk or at one of the mansion gardens. Ceremony in the late afternoon. Cocktails on the terrace. Reception inside one of the great Newport rooms as the sun goes down over the Atlantic. The night ends late and the photos look like they belong on a magazine cover.

GABRIELA AND CHRIS AT OCHRE COURT
Ochre Court is the mansion at the centre of the Salve campus and the most searched wedding venue in Newport. Gabriela and Chris are marrying there, so we shot their engagement session on the grounds: the front lawn at golden hour, the Great Hall staircase under the stained glass, champagne on the terrace at blue hour. ENGAGEMENT SESSIONS AT THE NEWPORT MANSIONS
Most of my Newport couples book their engagement session here too. The Preservation Society of Newport County allows permitted one hour photo sessions on the grounds of The Elms, The Breakers, Marble House, and Chateau-sur-Mer, and The Elms is the one I recommend for its sunken garden and quiet terrace. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can anyone get married at Salve Regina?
Yes. Salve Regina recently dropped its alumni only restriction, so the university now welcomes wedding bookings from any couple. Demand is high so peak Saturday dates often book twelve to eighteen months out.
Where does the ceremony actually happen?
Catholic ceremonies at Salve Regina take place at the Our Lady of Mercy chapel on campus. The reception then moves a short walk to Ochre Court. Some couples choose to hold a civil ceremony outdoors on the lawn at Ochre Court instead, with the chapel reserved for couples who specifically want the Catholic rite.
Do you photograph weddings at other Newport venues?
Yes. I shoot at the full range of Newport venues each year including Castle Hill Inn, Belle Mer, Rosecliff, The Chanler, OceanCliff, and Newport Vineyards. If you’re touring options I can share my honest perspective on which property fits your day best.
Do you cover engagement sessions in Newport?
Yes. Engagement sessions are included in most of my full day wedding collections and Newport is one of my favorite locations to shoot them. How far in advance should I book a Newport wedding photographer?
Peak Saturday Newport dates book twelve to eighteen months out, especially in September and October when the light is at its best. Friday and Sunday dates often have more flexibility inside six months. For 2027 weddings the strongest dates are already filling now.
What does your editorial style look like for a Newport wedding?
Editorial means we use the venue the way a magazine would. At Salve Regina that means using the mansion granite and the Cliff Walk as a backdrop. Long lens portraits framed against Ochre Court. Wide overhead shots of the ceremony with the Atlantic in the background. Detail work on the marble in the main hall. I shoot the photojournalism of the day and the editorial moments together rather than choosing one over the other.
