Ochre Court is the Newport mansion that was built to be looked at. Richard Morris Hunt finished it in 1892 for the Goelets, Salve Regina University has kept it since 1947, and today it is the most searched wedding venue in Newport. Gabriella and Chris are marrying soon, so we spent a late summer evening there for their engagement session, and it doubled as a scouting trip for their wedding day. This is what the house gives a couple, what it costs in 2026, and how I would photograph a wedding inside it.

We started on the front lawn an hour before sunset, when the west light rakes across the limestone and the whole façade turns gold. Gabriella wore white with a bouquet of red roses, which is exactly the right instinct here: the house is grey stone and dark oak, and a single saturated colour carries a frame. Chris in black did the rest.
From the lawn we went inside. The Great Hall staircase, the stained glass landing, the gilded salon, the terrace arches, and then back out for champagne on the steps as the sky went blue behind the chimneys. Two hours, no rushing, and the couple had walked every space they will use on their wedding day. That is the quiet advantage of an engagement session at your own venue.

Most Newport mansions were built to entertain. Ochre Court was built to impress, and it still does. A French Gothic château on Ochre Point Avenue with the Cliff Walk at the back of the lawn, a three storey Great Hall with painted ceilings, a stone staircase that splits and turns under stained glass, and terraces that face the Atlantic. You get the whole house to yourselves for the evening. That combination, one couple, one mansion, the ocean, is what makes it the most searched venue in the city.
For a photographer it solves the problem every mansion wedding has: where do the portraits go when the light changes. Here the answer is always ten steps away. Sun on the lawn, shade under the arches, window light on the landing, tungsten and gilt in the salon, blue hour on the terrace.

This is the room that sells the venue and it is the room you will dance in. It is tall and dark, with a red carpet up the stairs and light coming from high windows, so it photographs best either in the late afternoon when the sun comes through the leaded glass, or at night with the chandeliers on and the gilt doing the work. The staircase is the portrait: from the landing looking down, or from the floor looking up through the carved balustrade.

Off the hall, the salons are Louis XV gold on white and dark oak panelling. Warm, intimate, and a natural place for a first look or a quiet portrait before the reception fills the hall. Watch the mirrors. They double the room and they double the photographer if you are careless.

The ocean side of the house is the reason cocktail hour happens outdoors here. Stone arches, balustrades, and steps down to the lawn, with the Atlantic beyond. In September and October the sun sets over the house and lights the terrace from the side. Bring the couple out here for ten minutes before dinner. It is the frame they will print.

Wide, green, and open to the water, the lawn is where ceremonies happen under a tent or open sky, and where family formals go without a single power line in the background. The Cliff Walk runs along the bottom of it. Salve Regina ceremonies for Catholic couples are held in Our Lady of Mercy chapel across campus, with John La Farge stained glass and seating in the round, and it is a four minute walk to the terrace.

Salve Regina publishes its fees, which is rare for Newport, so here they are. The rental for Ochre Court on a Friday or Saturday from May through October is $30,000, or $17,500 for couples with a university affiliation. Sunday through Thursday in season is $25,000, or $12,500 affiliated. From November through April a Friday or Saturday is $25,000 and a weeknight $20,000, with the affiliated rate at $12,500 and $10,000. The Young Building and McAuley Hall, the smaller venues on campus, are $15,000, or $10,000 affiliated.
The rental buys a five hour reception with tables, chairs, setup and breakdown, and a coordinator from the university’s events office. Security, housekeeping and a one day event insurance policy are billed on top, which is why most couples see a starting figure a little over $31,000 before catering. Catering comes from one of four approved partners: Blackstone Caterers, Flavours by Sodexo, McGrath Clambakes and Catering, or Glorious Affairs. Budget a full Ochre Court wedding for 150 guests somewhere north of $80,000 all in, and treat that as a floor.
The alumni only rule people still ask about ended in 2024. Any couple can book Ochre Court now, and the affiliated discount applies to alumni, students, faculty and staff.

For a September wedding with a 4pm ceremony: getting ready off site, at the Chanler or a Bellevue Avenue rental, with my associate photographer on the second suite. A first look on the terrace at 2:30 while the light is still high and the arches give shade. Ceremony at 4 in the chapel or on the lawn. Family formals on the lawn at 4:45 with the house behind. Cocktails on the terrace at 5:15 as the sun swings west, and fifteen minutes with the couple at the balustrade around 6:30 for the frames that matter. Into the Great Hall for dinner as the chandeliers take over. First dances under the painted ceiling. Blue hour portrait on the steps between courses. Out by 10:45.

Ochre Court is one of the venues I cover as a Newport wedding photographer, and Salve Regina is where Monica and Jameson’s engagement session on that page was made. My guide to the best Newport RI wedding venues puts Ochre Court next to Rosecliff, Marble House, The Elms and Castle Hill with the fees for each. For engagement sessions at the other mansions, see The Elms and the rain-soaked Cliff Walk session.
The 2026 rental is $30,000 for a Friday or Saturday from May through October, $25,000 on other days in season, and $20,000 to $25,000 from November to April. Couples affiliated with Salve Regina pay roughly half. Security, housekeeping and insurance are extra, and catering comes from four approved caterers, so most weddings start above $31,000 before food and drink.
No. The alumni only restriction ended in 2024. Any couple can book, and affiliated couples receive a discounted rate.
Up to 200 for a seated reception inside the mansion, with tented receptions on the ocean lawn able to go larger. The Young Building on Bellevue Avenue is the smaller option at up to 100 guests.
Yes, on the ocean lawn or the terrace. Catholic ceremonies take place in Our Lady of Mercy chapel on campus, a short walk from the mansion. Salve Regina makes the chapel available to non affiliated couples subject to availability.
11pm. The rental includes a five hour reception window, so a 6pm dinner start lands the exit right on time.
The Great Hall staircase from the landing, the terrace arches at cocktail hour, the balustrade with the Atlantic behind it, the ocean lawn for family formals, and the front steps at blue hour with the chandeliers glowing through the windows.
Yes. Salve Regina is one of the Newport venues I photograph, and the images on this page are from Gabriella and Chris’s engagement session on the grounds ahead of their wedding. If you are planning a wedding here, start your inquiry and I will send a full Newport wedding gallery.
Yes. Engagement sessions are included in most of my full day wedding collections, and if Ochre Court is your venue it is the smartest place to shoot them. You walk the rooms with your photographer before the day, and you get portraits in the house without borrowing time from the wedding.

Engagement sessions are included in most of my full day wedding collections and are also available on their own. View pricing, browse the full portfolio, or start your inquiry.
