Victoria and John met me at The Beach Club in Centerville on a warm July evening, with the flag still flying over the clubhouse and the last of the day’s light sliding across Nantucket Sound. If you have ever summered on this stretch of Cape Cod, you know this place on sight: gray shingles, navy awnings, and a line of blue umbrellas that has barely moved since 1927.

Some locations you have to work for. This one hands you everything the moment you step onto the boardwalk. We started at the clubhouse, wandered into the dunes above the beach, and finished at the waterline as the light went gold. Victoria wore a white sundress that was made for the wind. John kept it classic in a white shirt, with a blue blazer for the first half. Nobody checked a shot list. We just walked and let the place do what it does.

I photograph engagement sessions all over Cape Cod, and Centerville keeps pulling me back. The Beach Club sits on Long Beach Road, on the narrow strip of sand between the Centerville River and Nantucket Sound. It has been a private, seasonal seaside club since 1927, and its members have kept the beachfront clubhouse almost exactly as it was. Gatherings here happen through the club, which keeps the beach quiet and the backgrounds clean. For photographs, that restraint is the entire gift.

Into the dunes

The dune grass above the beach is where the session slowed down. We found a seat in the sand, let the wind do the styling, and I stayed out of the way. These two are easy together in the way that makes my job simple: a forehead against a shoulder, a laugh that lands mid sentence, hands that keep finding each other without being asked.

Down the beach as the light turned

The beach here faces Nantucket Sound to the south, so late light rakes along the sand instead of dropping behind the dunes. That is the reason I schedule Centerville sessions for the last stretch of the evening. The water goes from navy to pewter to gold, the crowds are gone because there were never crowds to begin with, and every direction you point the camera is clean.

Golden hour and a run for the water

By the end nobody was posing. They ran. The wind picked up, the light went honey colored, and the last frames of the night are my favorite kind: a ring catching the sun, salt air in her hair, and two people who forgot I was there. This is what I want for every couple I photograph on Cape Cod, and it is why an engagement session is worth doing before the wedding. You learn how you move together in front of a camera, and I learn how to photograph you.
